How to Find a Great Italian Restaurant

How can good Italian food or a great Italian restaurant be identified?  What follows is one foodie’s opinion.

First of all, you must understand Italy’s wonderful tradition of fine food. The importance of cuisine to Italian culture cannot be overstated. Food is one of the central pieces of Italian life, and why shouldn’t it be? The choices are endless!  Think about Italy’s geography for a second:

It stretches far from north to south, from the heat of Sicily to the Alps. Therefore, it has a wide array of growing seasons and soil types. This means a rich diversity of ingredients for food.
It is a peninsula, meaning it is nearly surrounded by the sea but also connected to the great Eurasian land mass. This provides both an abundance of fresh seafood and foreign ingredients from neighboring lands.
It is situated between Europe and Africa in the Mediterranean. It is not an exaggeration to say that all Mediterranean cultures have wonderful food cultures. This is true from North Africa to Lebanon and Israel, France, Greece, Spain and, of course, Italy.

When people think of noodles and pasta, Italy is what comes to mind.  Remember, though, that those wonderful inventions came to Italy from China thanks to Marco Polo. It tells you a lot about Italian food culture that something so basic became associated with Italy even though it did not originate there.

At any rate, Italian culture rests heavily on food. Therefore, the food is the most important part of any Italian restaurant. Of course, a great Italian restaurant will have a great wine list, a clean and elegant decor, and marvelous service, but a good Italian restaurant can get by on great food alone, even if they have a crummy wine list, poor service, and dingy decor.

By the way, if you leave an “Italian” restaurant hungry, this restaurant cannot be called authentic.

A white tablecloth and high bill do not a great bistro make. Frankly, I can’t stand those fancy Italian restaurants in Manhattan that charge you $ 400 for a morsel that makes you want to stop for a slice of pizza on the way home. A great Italian ristorante will leave you full, not stuffed, but full.

The second component of a great Italian restaurant is the service. The service will be warm and professional, but not overly friendly. After the orders are taken and the meal gets rolling, the service should be nearly invisible. Run — don’t walk — from any Italian restaurant where the waitperson address the table like this:

“How you guys doin’ tonight?” when ladies are seated at the table. This is most un-Italian of them. An Italian would never call a woman “guy.” Even in spaghetti-and-meatballs-type places, the waiter might say, “How is everyone this evening?” The won’t tarry with small talk in the white-tablecloth places, not the good ones, anyway. You and your comfort are all that matter.

The third aspect of a great Italian dining experience is the atmosphere. I don’t know what it is, but Italians seem to be able to create a magical ambiance anywhere. I have eaten at places in strip malls in Kansas City suburbs — as un-romantic a setting as there is — that come very close to greatness. A truly outstanding Italian restaurant will just have a certain feeling from the minute you walk in the door, a warmth and a glow that defies description.

So prioritieze in this order:

food
service
ambiance

If your favorite Italian restaurant meets all three conditions, you can call it great.

For those in the New York City area, I recommend this Flushing, Queens, Italian restaurant.

Ways to Improve A Restaurant Appeal

Restaurants these days are looking for ways to improve the appeal of their spaces, which they think would increase more traffic for their business and increase their profit and revenue. With today’s current innovations, it wouldn’t be that hard to accomplish.

There are easy ways to improve a restaurant’s interior and exterior appeal. You may start with the curb appearance of your restaurant. According to surveys, customers tend to be enticed more if the curb appeal of the restaurant looks more neat, clean, and cozy. To accomplish this you could start cleaning up your front space, then place decorative ornaments. Nonetheless, these ornaments should not make your space cluttered. Ornaments that could be used are plants, vases, statues, and more.

Another way to improve a restaurant’s appeal is by using lighting effects. Lights are so versatile that they could be used indoors and outdoors.

For small restaurant spaces, lights could emphasize your space at night and could provide a more dramatic effect especially if you use dim lights. Lighting effects that are used in the inside would depend upon the theme of the restaurant. If it is a little bit modern, you may use led lights and brighter lights. For traditional restaurants, you may do well with goose neck lights and lamps.

Next, things that could enhance a restaurant space would be using furniture and fixtures. In fact, this is the most important aspect that should be considered whenever designing a restaurant. At times, by just using the right furniture and fixtures can bring tremendous deference amongst competitors. Just like how other coffee restaurants did, such as Starbucks. They reinvented chair’s designs to be more cozy and flexible for customers; thus, made it become the number one fad among other restaurants in the market.

Another thing that could help boost a restaurant’s appeal would be using plants as decorative ornaments both in the inside and outside. Plants, nonetheless, would look more elegant if place in beautiful planters. Restaurant planters come in different styles, sizes, and materials. The most popular materials to be used are PVC materials. These materials are flexible and durable as they could be placed outside without having to worry about its maintenance. These materials could withstand any weather, either hot or cold. Another material of restaurant planters is fiber glasses. These restaurant planters are normally used in high end restaurants as they are quite expensive.

There are distinct ways to improve restaurant’s appeal. What matters most is their versatility and flexibility both in materials and styles.

Carlo Mamar shares tips on how to make your public spaces more attractive and inviting by using containers such as large commercial planters, commercial planters, modern planters, and other types of indoor and outdoor planters.

Piadina – Found In A Montreal Restaurant Franchise

There is a Montreal restaurant franchise that is using Piadina as one of the healthy foods they are offering customers. This is an unusual but interesting twist when it comes to fast food enterprises in that it actually has created a healthy menu of Italian gourmet foods to sell to the public as a fast food. The foods are prepared in clean kitchens by a fast service staff. They are then presented to the public who is clamoring to get to them. After all, everyone today is in tune with the idea that they should eat healthy. It has been discussed just about everywhere and most people, even if they are not eating healthy, are aware that they should do this and which foods are healthy to eat.

People are looking for healthy foods to eat such as Piadina, but are not willing to give up the fast food life that has made it so easy to grab something while they are out when it comes to food. They want to feed themselves and their familys healthy food but find that they are limited when it comes to choices in this manner. However, a Montreal restaurant franchise has found a way to give people what they want without having to compromise speed. They are offering franchise opportunities for those who want to get in on the ground floor of this enterprise, which is relatively new.

The idea of healthy Italian food served as fast food was brought to Montreal in 2010 and has since taken off to the point where those who developed the concept have begun to offer franchises for those who are looking for a business opportunity that will cater to the people who are eating out today. As people continue to demand healthier foods, they find that they are limited, especially when taking a look at those that are offered at established fast food restaurants. Although these restaurants are trying to offer some healthier fare, they are usually short on imagination.

Because people want to eat healthy and also want fast service so that they can order their food and get it right away, there is a need in the market for foods that taste good, look good and are also healthy to eat. Most people do not think of Italian food in this way, but there are many Italian foods that can be served in this manner. In addition to being healthy, they taste good as well and have a gourmet quality to them that people cannot ignore.

A franchise is the best opportunity to start a restaurant because you already have the essentials for success built right into the business. The franchise owner will have the support as well as marketing of the business right away and will not have to try to guess as to what the public wants. This is an opportunity for those who are looking for a chance to start their own business to do so without the usual risk that goes when it comes to opening up a single restaurant that people do not know anything about. Those who are familiar with the restaurant business know that healthy foods that taste great along with clean kitchens and fast service are the way of the future.

The way of the future in fast foods is Piadina and other healthy Italian foods that are good to eat but can be served quickly. In order to find out more about a Montreal restaurant franchise near you go to Lunch Box Cuisinette.

4 Keys to a Successful Restaurant

One of the warnings that new restaurant owners hear when they talk about opening their own restaurant is that it will require long hours in order to earn the mount of money you would earn in a 9 to 5 job. Sadly, for many restaurant owners, that is very true. Everything they own is tied up in their restaurant, and it consumes nearly all of their time. You can see this in almost any community with independent restaurants. They are surviving, but are they are not what you would consider restaurant success stories.

Restaurant success can mean many different things, depending on who you talk to, but most owners will agree that there is a vast difference between running a successful restaurant and managing to keep your doors open. Most people with an entrepreneurial spirit do not want to become slaves to their business. Yet many restaurant owners become just that.

If the restaurant is open, the owner is there.

So, how does a restaurant become successful. While defining success will be different from owner to owner, there are some keys to restaurant success that most will agree on.

Food

A great meal starts with great food. A meal that is well prepared with quality ingredients is a must on any menu. It would take a true friend to come back to your restaurant time and again if the food was not good.

Along with the quality of the food is that it is consistent. One truth of restaurants is that you will not be able to please everyone with every dish. If the majority of the people that try an item like it, then don’t change it. If you change your recipe every time a customer complains you will never have any consistency with your menu. Then when a customer that did like the item returns, they will be unhappy that the recipe changed, and they did not receive what they wanted.

Service

Customers will go where they are treated well. It does not matter how good the food is if your customer service is bad. Your customers are coming to your restaurant for the dining experience, not just for good food. If their experience is not enjoyable, they will start looking for a restaurant that treats them with care and respect.

For your restaurant to be a success, you need to take the time to train your staff in how to treat your customers. Everyone from the greeter to the dishwasher needs to know and understand how to respond to any complaint or suggestion from a customer. While the customer may not always be right, they are the one who pay the bills. Without them, you have no business.

Cleanliness

The next thing that will add to, or destroy, the customers experience is the cleanliness of your restaurant operation. For many customers, if there is anything that appears to be dirty or unsanitary, they will automatically assume that the entire operation is unsanitary. They will never know whether you serve the best food in town or not, because they will be so put off by cleanliness issues that they will never eat at your restaurant.

Cleanliness and sanitation does not stop with the physical building. It extends to the hygiene of your staff. Although it can be difficult to have personal cleanliness discussions with your staff, you need to make sure that they come to work clean, and wearing clean uniforms.

Cost Control

While your customers will never see the administrative part of your business, they will see the results. If you fail to keep your costs under control you business will suffer. When costs tart to escalate, there are things that some restaurant owners do that will have serious consequences to your business.

The first step restaurant owners take is to reduce the size of the staff. While this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it can have some negative results. If the staff gets too small to serve the customers adequately, you will have customer service issues. In order to avoid that the owner will need to start doing more work on top of the work they are already doing. That will mean even more hours spent in the restaurant.

The next thing restaurant owners consider to reduce costs is to use lower quality ingredients. Lower quality ingredients will lead to lower quality menu items, which will ultimately result in fewer customers. If the owner tries to lower the food cost without lowering the quality of the food, they will sometimes consider raising the menu prices. When money is already tight, many customers are bargain hunting, and increased menu prices will drive them away.

The easiest way to control your costs is to make sure you have menu items properly costed out before setting your menu. Then you need to monitor your costs to make sure they are in line with your budget.

Restaurant success is a very real possibility for owners who can do the four items listed above. the better you are at any or all of these areas, the better your odds of having a successful restaurant.

Special Insurance Issues For Restaurant Owners

Owning your own restaurant may be your opportunity of a lifetime. A restaurant business is also an intense insurance risk. A realistic plan to reduce your risk coupled with insurance protection can help keep your dream a safe investment.

Kitchen Fires -
Prevention is your best safeguard! Be sure that you have appropriate fire suppression systems in place and maintained. Insurance companies typically require that your heat producing cooking equipment, particularly grease sources (fryers, grills, ranges), have a fire suppression system and vent hood overhead. Also, grease handling in the kitchen is very important. Grease presents a high risk of both starting a fire and fuelling a fire started from another source.    Note: As of January 1, 2008, Texas Insurance Code requires commercial cooking areas be protected by a UL 300 Wet Foam system.

A dry chemical system is now considered obsolete and will be “red tagged” by fire code inspectors. This new higher standard has evolved due to the use of new hotter fryer oils in food preparation. Only a Wet Foam system has the capability to cool a fire sufficiently to keep these cooking oils from reigniting.

Electrical Fire -
Second to a cooking or a grease fire, overloaded or malfunctioning electrical equipment is a particular risk for restaurants. Austin had three restaurants burn to the ground due to electrical malfunctions in 2006 (Chili’s on Stassney, East Austin’s Berts BBQ and a Chinese Buffet). I particularly look for electrical issues in the kitchens when I do a field inspection of a food service prospect. I often see jury-rigged electrical wiring, worn-out appliances and overloaded circuits. There is no good reason to take these risks.

Slip & Fall Lawsuits -
While having a customer slip and fall is a risk for any business open to the public, restaurants are at particular risk because of the large number of customer visits and the added hazard of food spills. General Liability Insurance protection is critical for your risk to the public. One of our restaurant client’s was sued after a patron tripped in a pothole in the parking lot in 2006.   Walk your entire business location and look for any irregular walking surface or other hazard in your public space that can cause a person to trip and fall. Eliminate these hazards if possible and mark potential trip hazards that can’t be removed. Protect stairs with strong handrails. Potential food spills need a response plan and equipment ready. Be sure that your employees and shift managers know how important it is to your guest’s safety (and your financial safety) to have any spills promptly cleaned-up.

Food Related Lawsuits -
Restaurant owners can be sued after a customer becomes ill after eating and contracting a food borne illness. Safe handling of food is an important priority for any restaurant. As an example, in 2008, many patrons of a Minnesota cafe became ill with salmonella after eating a raw jalapeno pepper garnish. There are no short-cuts in safe food handling. Know your food product sources. Keep your food inventory fresh by ordering sensibly and discarding any food approaching expiration. Keep your food preparation areas clean and uncontaminated.

Liquor Liability -
If you serve beer, wine or other liquor, be sure you are protected from lawsuits resulting from alcohol-related incidents. Don’t risk you Liquor License or a lawsuit by serving intoxicated or under-aged patrons. Have your alcohol servers TABC (Texas Alcohol Beverage Commission) certified and enforce the TABC rules. Beer and Wine can be an important profit center for your restaurant venture with appropriate practices. Be sure to include Liquor Liability coverage in your insurance policy.

Property Risks -
Operating a restaurant often includes considerable equipment, building improvements and food stock. Adequate property insurance protection is critical and may also be required by your lease. Visualize what it would take to restore your restaurant after a major fire. Be sure to include the lease improvements to restore your space, the kitchen equipment & built-ins, tableware and food stocks.

Employee Injury Lawsuits -
A food establishment is very much a people driven business. Your hired help is your biggest asset and one of your biggest lawsuit risks. Food preparation has some inherent hazards for employee injuries. Minimize the kitchen risks with appropriate training and safety appliances. Another typical injury for employees in food service establishments is slipping and falling.   Worker’s Compensation Insurance is critical liability protection for any employer. The added risks of working in a restaurant environment increase the need for this protection. Risk reduction is also an important strategy.

Conclusion
Prevention is your best insurance in the restaurant business! Understand the special risks that you have as a restaurant owner and do what you can to reduce them. Buy appropriate commercial insurance protection to help make your food service venture a safer investment.   For help on restaurant insurance, please link: http://www.quoteaustininsurance.com/pages/home/restaurant.php

The Best Dinner Restaurants In Ventura Blvd

It is a best place to eat Italian food in Ventura Blvd Restaurants in California. Best Gnocchi I ever had! I drive from Thousand Oaks for my Gnocchi and the Chicken Marsala is pretty flavorsome too. I gave it 5 stars because La Finestra it is one the top eateries in Ventura Blvd.

I lately bought a Groupon online for La Finestra and decided to try this place out with the old lady while she was in the town visiting for the weekend.

This place is truly lovable. Very clean, crisp, easy and understated. We had the Insalada Rustica—which was SO fresh and crisp. One of the best salads I have had in a while. The produce was actually fresh–like NOTICEABLY amazingly fresh. Extremely clean (no dirt) and gently dressed, which I appreciate. There’s little worse than a salad swimming in dressing!

We also had the angel hair pasta with tomatoes and basil (straightforward but good) and the home-made spinach and ricotta ravioli with pink sauce which was Incredible. Awfully tasty indeed.

For dessert we shared the apple tarte (which was better than most that I have had) it consisted of a really thin chewy crust with layers of paper thin apples baked on top, accompanied by a scoop of vanilla ice cream. And of course, I can not forget the tiramisu. OMG. Extraordinary. The marscapone and creme were so light; I swear it felt as though I was eating a cloud. Just the correct amount of sweetness–and so smooth. I had the most splendidly satisfied and happy palete when I was done. A truly stuffed feeling with a lingering sweetness—one that I’ve only experienced once before, after a wonderfully easy meal in Venice (Italy, not California) that also ended with a creamy and smooth tiramisu.

It really had the warm, homie feeling of a family multinational. All the servers and staff were warm and pleasant! It was great to feel a bit like we could stay so long as we wanted–and just enjoy our meal.

The only minor complaint I may have that keeps me from giving it five stars would be the service, towards the end of our meal was bit slow. We had to actively look for and flag down our (very friendly and awesome) server. But that was perhaps thanks to the fact that things in the eateries were reasonably busy by the end of the night. Maybe they are definitely a bit under staffed? But over all, a great experience. My mouth and my stomach (and my Mom) were all happy when we left.

If you are searching for a Ventura Blvd Restaurants then this is a great place to visit.
